M16 (a star cluster around 2 million years old) and the Eagle Nebula lie about 7,000 light-years away. Described as elephant trunks or Pillars of Creation, dense, dusty columns rising near the center are light-years in length but are gravitationally contracting to form stars. Energetic radiation from the cluster stars erodes material near the tips, eventually exposing the embedded new stars. Extending from the bottom of the frame is another dusty starforming column known as the Fairy of Eagle Nebula. The Crescent Nebula (also known as NGC 6888, Caldwell 27, Sharpless 105) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, about 5000 light-years away. It is formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 (HD 192163) colliding with and energizing the slower moving wind ejected by the star when it became a red giant around 250,000to 400,000 years ago. The result of the collision is a shell and two shock waves, one moving outward and one moving inward. This field in the Vulpecula Milky Way shows a complex region of a bright nebula, surrounding a open cluster (Roslund 4). The bright nebula is also cataloged as GN 20.02.07 and Ced175a / 175b / 175c. Don't know much about this cluster in Vulpecula - except it seemed pretty enough to deserve some imaging time!
